Do You Know??

While you sip a coffee this morning, take a time to think about it for a while.

Perhaps you already knew that coffee is a kind of brewed drink prepared from roasted seeds, have a stimulating effect to human due to its caffeine content, and one of the most-consumed beverages in the world. But do you know where is it come from?

Map of coffee cultivation: (r) Coffea canephora, (a) Coffea arabica, (m) both

Coffee trees are planted in over 70 countries, cultivated primarily in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The two most commonly grown are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (a.k.a. Robusta). Once the berries ripe, they are picked, processed, and dried. Unroasted coffee is one the most traded agricultural commodities in the world. Indonesia is at the 4th rank (2007) top twenty green coffee producers.

Coffee's aroma and flavor are generated by caffeol oil, which is developed during the roasting process at high degree temperature (mainly at about 200 °C). Draker roasts are generally bolder because they have less fiber content and a more surgary flavor. Lighter roasts have a more complex and therefore perceived stronger flavor from aromatic oils and acids. Decaffeinated seeds are done while they are still green and the extracted caffeine is usually sold to the pharmaceutical industry.

Civet cat

The most expensive coffee beans in the world is kopi luwak (civet coffee), which came out as a result of riped coffee beans partially digested by civet cat. After the beans are collected, they are washed and roasted. The intense odor of the drink come from the musk secreted by the anal glands of the cat. Kopi luwak is produced mainly on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Sulawesi in the Indonesian archipelago.

The selling price for kopi luwak is between US $100 and $600 per pound.
